Although these two active learning methodologies are often grouped together, they are not the same. They differ in several important ways, leading to distinct learning experiences and outcomes for pupils.
The main difference lies in their educational purpose. Collaborative Learning aims to foster pupils' creativity and encourages them to generate different ideas and solutions. As a result, the outcomes are likely to vary from one group to another. Cooperative Learning, by contrast, does not primarily focus on creativity. Instead, it is designed to promote the acquisition of knowledge and skills through structured teamwork, with each pupil playing an active role in achieving a common learning objective.
The following infographic summarises the main similarities, differences and practical applications of both approaches in Physical Education.

Padlet is a free digital tool that enables teachers to implement active learning methodologies such as Cooperative Learning, Collaborative Learning, and Project-Based Learning with ease.
It also encourages pupils to develop critical thinking skills—particularly through Collaborative Learning—as well as a range of key competences, including digital competence and social and civic competence.
Essentially, Padlet is designed to organise content in a highly visual and intuitive way, making it particularly useful for pupils when creating, organising and presenting their work.
In Physical Education, pupils can use Padlet to present an activity or project, create digital resources, or simply organise the content they have covered throughout the course.
The following video tutorial explains what Padlet is, how it works, and how it can be effectively integrated into Physical Education lessons.

Google My Maps is a highly effective digital tool for developing pupils' digital competence while implementing Cooperative Learning activities.
Google's My Maps feature enables users to create customised maps from a standard template by adding markers, routes and other easy-to-use interactive elements. Thanks to this free tool, teachers can design engaging and motivating learning activities in Physical Education.
It is particularly valuable when teaching topics such as orienteering, spatial awareness, and environmental education, allowing pupils to work collaboratively while applying their knowledge in meaningful and authentic contexts.
